SCADA Migration Readiness Checklist
The five things that quietly blow up migration timelines - and how to be ready for each. Print it, share it, or work through it with our team.
1. Tag inventory & naming
- Export a complete tag list from every OEM, PLC, and SCADA node.
- Flag duplicate, ambiguous, and vendor-specific tag names.
- Define a target naming standard (e.g. {AssetType}/{AssetId}/{Domain}/{Signal}).
- Map legacy tags to standardized UDTs before migration begins.
2. Historian & data continuity
- Document current historian scope, retention, and compression settings.
- Decide on parallel-run, backfill, or bridge strategy for historical data.
- Confirm trend continuity requirements with operations and compliance.
- Validate historian read/write performance on the target platform.
3. Alarms & notifications
- Inventory alarm definitions, priorities, and shelving rules.
- Re-model alarms on the target platform and test against real conditions.
- Rebuild notification pipelines (email, SMS, on-call) and verify delivery.
4. Redundancy & network
- Document current redundancy topology and failover behavior.
- Confirm network segmentation and firewall rules for the new system.
- Test gateway redundancy and store-and-forward under fault conditions.
5. Graphics, security & handoff
- Catalog screens to migrate, consolidate, or retire.
- Map user roles and access to the target platform's security model.
- Plan phased cutover site-by-site with a rollback path.
- Define documentation and training deliverables for handoff.
